WHY ARE B VITAMINS IMPORTANT?
All the B vitamins, biotin and folate are involved in energy production and adequate amounts decrease both tiredness and fatigue. B vitamin requirements increase substantially during exercise and as B Vitamins are water soluble and not stored, they need replenishing every day. Importantly Vitamin B2, B6, B5 and B12 are needed for normal red blood cell production, so inadequate amounts may result in immature red blood cells with poor oxygen carrying capacity and resultant poor sporting performance. B1 and B2 are required for maintaining normal iron levels in the red blood cells and iron in itself is needed for energy metabolism and formation of haemoglobin that carries valuable oxygen for heart and muscle tissue. Some of the B vitamins are involved in normal nervous system function and psychological function. Vitamin B6 is particularly important for the sports person as it is involved in the manufacture of cysteine, an important amino acid that removes toxins produced as a by-product of strenuous exercise and can convert itself to glucose when glucose is depleted. Strenuous exercise burns cell glucose, which can leave the athlete tired and fatigued. Some of the B vitamins are also important for immune system support and normal hormone production.
